These are just some of the thoughts that have crossed my mind and that undoubtedly have biased my opinion of the individuals I meet over the virtual platform. Just remember that I’m speaking for myself and NOT on behalf of an institution, or organization. It’s meant to be light-hearted, sarcastic, and opinionated. This post is meant to focus on your appearance on video conferencing platforms, most specifically, Zoom. So, I’ve interacted with a lot of people on Zoom and have formulated some opinions on how individuals choose to present themselves on the platform. To say I’ve spent a lot of time on the platform is an understatement. I’ve had pretty extensive experience with Zoom in the last year – I planned and ran all of the Zoom programming for the AMWA Virtual Meeting, have been designing ACGME Zoom meetings, and I’ve also been running Virtual Preop Call Program sessions over Zoom. Premeds applying to medical school, medical students applying to residency, and residents applying to fellowship will not have these opportunities in the new virtual format. I loved 4th year because of the opportunity to travel across the country to explore new areas, meet my fellow applicants and current residents, as well as check out the hospital I might be living in for the next 4 years of my life. From an interviewer perspective, the virtual format may allow for more interviews to be scheduled, the interview “day” can be shortened, and interviewers do not have to be local to the organization. From the interviewee perspective, there are certain inherent benefits of virtual interviews: cost-savings from not having to travel, ease of scheduling, and ability to interview in a more comfortable space. Ensure the room is clean and add one or two small items in the background, a flower or book. This year poses an interesting challenge for applicants to medical school, residency, fellowship and jobs in general. The idea is to find a well-lit clean room where the job hunter feels relaxed and calm. If not, a cheaper option if to have the camera in front of a large window, facing the job candidate, allowing the sun to naturally light up the room. If a job seeker has the equipment, they can set up lighting behind the camera facing the interviewee which lights up their face. Others will set up the video call in a dark room with little like creating dark shadows that create a horror film type of environment. Some candidates will set up the camera with a large window behind, where the sun blinds the interview panel, hiding the applicant’s face. One of the most important elements of being on camera is the lighting. The virtual interview setup is similar to setting up a space for a video or film. Camera, Lights, Actionįinally, think about the essentials of creating a video. In addition, a full view of the room will either show too much – which is distracting, can highlight mess which doesn’t create a good impression, or has lots of clear space, which is seen as boring. One, in a full view, shot the applicant’s face is less clear which leads to less non-verbal communication, facial expressions. Blue conveys relaxation, calmness and as discussed in Very Well Mind, blue is associated with stability and reliability.Ī full room frame is bad for virtual interviews. If a blank wall is chosen, use a coloured wall. Some hiring managers may even feel the applicants are hiding something. A white wall doesn’t say anything about the candidate’s personality. The camera position is highly important as discussed in our ‘online interview tips’ article. It is common for interviewees to choose a clean space, a close-up camera that captures the applicant’s face with a blank background – a painted wall. With a real background there are three obvious choices: The number one rule for a virtual job interview is to use a real background. These backgrounds either look fake, seem inappropriate for a job interview, or create a ghost effect – where the applicant’s body has a white shadow around it. Many online platforms offer fake backgrounds a beach, a beautiful countryside, or an office setting.
